When I first got to Oahu the first thing I asked around for were the kid friendly beaches on the island. Having a newborn and a 2 year old that didn't know how to swim, safety was a must. I was looking for a nice calm place to swim. A beach where I didn't have to worry about big waves or currents. As we all know, Hawaii is known for their huge swells and surfing competitions so waves, currents, and possible injury is always at high risk if you don't know what you are getting yourself into. Every time I asked what were the kid friendly beaches here I always got two names, Ko'Olina and Waikiki. Ko'Olina was always number one on the list for kids though. I have gone to both beaches and prefer Ko'Olina out of the two cause it's much calmer, less rocky, and less crowds.
Ko'Olina is composed of 4 different lagoons, each surrounded by walkways, palm trees, bushes, lawn, hotels, and wedding chapels. One of the hotels you can find here is the Disney Aulani Hotel (pictured on the right side of the picture above. The brown hotel building. Can't miss it.) This is the lagoon that we usually go to out of the four. We've gone to two so far and like this one better cause we always find more fishes and turtles when we go out snorkeling. We even saw a monk seal here once.
We love going to the lagoons cause we can let the girls play and not worry about a wave taking them away all of sudden... cause there's no big waves to worry about. We always go to the left side of the lagoon to an area were there's grass and shade and also next to the sand for them to play in. It's very relaxing to just sit there in the shade and watch your kids play around. It's a very family friendly environment. There's a lot to do here. It's perfect to go for a run, relax, suntan, snorkel, stand-up paddle board, photography, even get family pictures taken at, or even a date. I know my husband and I love to watch the sunset here. It always looks amazing no matter the day. Like it's on the west coast of the island, we get the perfect sunset view every time.
So now you know! If you're on the island and looking for a kid friendly beach head on over to Kapolei to the Ko'Olina Lagoons. You have 4 lagoons to choose from and it's perfect to spend the whole day there with your precious family.
